It is not merely a channel for transmitting events; rather, it produces meanings and constructs symbols that influence how society understands the nature of crime, its causes, and the ways in which it should be addressed. Media theorist Marshall McLuhan famously argued that “the medium is the message,” emphasizing that the manner in which crime is represented in the media can be as influential as the crime itself in shaping public consciousness.

Media as a Reflection of Crime

Traditionally, the media performs an informative role by reporting criminal incidents to the public. However, research indicates that media coverage is often characterized by selectivity and exaggeration. A study conducted by Steven Chermak (1995) demonstrated that news coverage tends to focus disproportionately on violent crimes, despite the fact that economic crimes occur more frequently in statistical terms. This imbalance contributes to what criminologists describe as the “fear of crime” among audiences.

Media and the Construction of Public Opinion

The framing of criminal news directly affects the formation of public opinion. According to Framing Theory, the selection of language, images, and narrative structures shapes whether audiences sympathize with victims or demonize offenders.

In the United States, a study by Kenneth Dowler (2003) found that extensive exposure to crime-related television programs increases public support for punitive criminal justice policies.

Media and Organized Crime

Organized crime presents a unique challenge for the media. On the one hand, investigative journalism has played a critical role in uncovering corruption networks and illicit trafficking operations, as demonstrated by the Panama Papers investigations in 2016, which exposed transnational money-laundering networks. On the other hand, criminal organizations may exploit media platforms as tools of disinformation, reputation laundering, or indirect intimidation. This duality renders the relationship between media and organized crime highly complex, particularly in states where protections for journalists remain weak.

Ethical and Professional Challenges

Despite the significant role of the media in combating crime, several ethical and professional concerns cannot be overlooked:

Privacy: Publishing images of victims or revealing details of their private lives may constitute a violation of human rights and personal dignity.

Influence on Justice: Excessive coverage of certain crimes may compromise the impartiality of judges or jurors.

Sensationalism versus Objectivity: Repeated exposure to violent imagery can contribute to the normalization of crime and violence within public consciousness.

Copycat Crime

One of the most prominent manifestations of the media’s direct influence on crime is the phenomenon known as “copycat crime,” whereby individuals imitate criminal acts they have seen in news reports, films, or even video games. Criminological studies, including research by Ray Surette (2015), indicate that extensive and highly detailed media coverage of criminal methods may inspire imitation, particularly among adolescents or psychologically vulnerable individuals.

For example, an increase in school shooting attempts in the United States was observed following the extensive media coverage of the Columbine High School massacre in 1999.

In certain Arab contexts, media reporting on youth suicide cases using specific methods reportedly contributed to similar imitation attempts. Consequently, some media institutions later adopted more cautious reporting policies regarding such incidents.

Media Imagination and the Construction of Crime Imagery

The influence of media extends beyond direct reality to the creation of a broader “social imagination” surrounding crime through films, television series, and detective fiction. This mediated imagination does not necessarily reflect the statistical reality of crime; rather, it often presents a dramatized and sensationalized version of it.

American television series such as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation contributed to what became known as the “CSI Effect,” whereby some jurors began demanding highly sophisticated forensic evidence in actual courtrooms due to their exposure to fictional crime dramas.

Conversely, media imagination can also play a constructive educational role by promoting legal and security awareness in simplified forms. Certain Arab television dramas, for instance, have highlighted issues related to narcotics trafficking and corruption.

The Egyptian television series Ikhtifaa (2018) presented a dramatic treatment of illicit trafficking and the relationship between power structures and crime, thereby stimulating broad public debate concerning corruption networks.

Similarly, the Egyptian series Kalabsh (2017–2019) portrayed the role of security forces in confronting criminal gangs, contributing to greater public awareness regarding organized crime and mechanisms for combating it.

References

Marshall McLuhan (1964). Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man.
